16 Days of Activism

PRONIA SUPPORTS THE CAMPAIGN: ‘16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE 2020’ | February 15, 2022

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.  This is the time of year when a whole lot of people come together and speak out on one topic: ending violence against women and girls. In the streets, in offices, in schools, in cities and in villages, people around the world galvanise to raise awareness and take action during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based-Violence.

PRONIA is supporting the call for action with a range of activities during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, 25 November – 10 December 2020 and is inviting the community to participate in various ways outlined below, in order to drive change.

Why does it matter?

Working with family violence and elder abuse programs for over 30 years, PRONIA is particularly aware of violence against women in all forms, which is far too often shrouded in silence, with violence sustained by cultures that don’t respond. Grasping the extent of the issue can be hard, since figures often only include those who report the problem. But PRONIA has dealt with hundreds of cases over the years, and that is why the organisation is supporting fully this cause and is working towards educating the community to change these discriminatory attitudes and behaviours.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, violence against women occurred at an alarming scale in every country of the world including Australia.  In many societies, this is accepted as normal behaviour and the global culture of discrimination against women allows violence to occur with impunity.

Violence against women is an international problem and as such, it requires global action. That is why, 16 Days of Activism is a crucial call for action as it shines a spotlight on the issue. These 16 days, PRONIA will be working hard to create public awareness about what needs to change in order to prevent it from happening in the first place in our communities, in our regions and in the world at large.

Who needs to be involved?

Everyone. Ending violence against women is everyone’s business. There are many ways you can make a difference, and you can start by participating in PRONIA’s 16 Days of Activism activities.  This year, PRONIA supports the campaign of  Respect Victoria under the theme, “Respect Women: Call It Out ‘Respect Is’ to coincide with the United Nations (UN) initiative 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

What I can do to get involved?

  1. Turn the world orange for 16 days. Use our Facebook selfie frame or virtual background to orange your social media profiles and raise awareness (available on PRONIA’s website from 25 November)
  2. Participate in the Walk Against Family Violence (details below) and wear something orange
  3. Get creative. Declare your objection to violence with a piece of art, a poem, any kind of artistic expression that resonates with you and share it on PRONIA’s Facebook page (details below)
  4. Know the real facts – One in three women and girls around the world are experiencing some form of violence in their lifetime. You can learn more about the different forms of violence by participating in PRONIA’s monthly family violence webinars. (pronia.com.au/events)

Walk against Family Violence – 25 November

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence will launch on Wednesday 25 November with the annual Walk against Family Violence (WAFV). PRONIA’s staff is participating in this event and is encouraging the community to take part. To register, visit the SAFE STEPS website, select ‘join a group’ and search for PRONIA – https://walk.safesteps.org.au/

Participants can ‘walk from home’ and the options for the walk are many, you can walk alone around the block, with a friend, or if there is a local group you can participate. Orange is the themed colour of 16 Days of Activism and all participants are encouraged to wear something orange during the walk. By doing so, we are raising awareness of family violence and violence against women in our communities. Pictures of all participants on the walk will be posted on PRONIA’s Facebook page.

Creative Expression against Gender-based Violence. PRONIA invites the community to speak out by contributing with a piece of art to share in PRONIA’s social media. In order to allow people to express themselves and raise their voices in their own way, the contributions are open to all art forms, such as painting, video, photography, poetry, music, and it doesn’t have to be created by you, it could be someone else’s as long as it resinates with you and you provide the credits. All contributions will be posted in the social media as part of PRONIA’s campaign during the 16 Days of Activism.

At PRONIA we believe that by sharing our art, we can go some way towards helping ourselves and our world. We can change our response to violence by speaking out, forming community, developing creative expression and celebrating our power. We are stronger when we come together.

Violence against women is not inevitable; it is preventable. During the 16 Days of Activism we all have the opportunity to speak out. Together, our message will be amplified, and our voices heard.

Peer Support Groups

November 19, 2021

A TELEPHONE LINE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE…..PRONIA’S PEER-SUPPORT GROUPS FOR GREEK SPEAKING PARTICIPANTS ARE CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH EACHOTHER, PROVIDING SUPPORT AND CREATING NEW FRIENDSHIPS

PRONIA, the Greek Welfare organisation begun the telephone group chats in August during the second lock-down with the aim to bring people together in a group chat for wellbeing, communication and engagement during COVID time. Some of these groups used to meet and chat in person at the Clayton community Centre in the past and will resume again once the Covid-19 restrictions allow it. These chats engage the most vulnerable cohorts of the Greek community – people who do not speak English, are frail, elderly, isolated, and vulnerable and/or are not computer literate and have no supports accessing internet. Every Tuesday or Friday, participants are in their phone lines for one hour, talking about their concerns, expressing their feelings, developing new social networks, connecting with others, reflecting on their experiences, whilst PRONIA facilitators provide ongoing support and enhance social connection for participants from all over Victoria.

Building Officer, Antonios Maglis who facilitates the groups said that PRONIA will continue to offer this service for the following months since they have been so successful. The groups form at the beginning of each month and have weekly chats for four weeks. At the end, participants can continue their contact on a personal basis with their new friends or if there is a need for additional assistance, PRONIA’s case workers would recommend suitable

Community Engagement and Capacity

services.

“Mrs M”

One of the program’s participants, Mrs M called PRONIA to thank the staff for the support that she received and stated that she is in daily contact with the lady she met via the peer

She explained that this connection has provided her a wonderful support and she receives a lot of strength and guidance from this friendship. She also wanted to thank PRONIA’s counsellor for the counselling sessions as she has found them very beneficial.
She was happy she has found inner strength to deal with her mental health issues and past trauma. So much so, her doctor recommended a decrease in her medication. She has been able to offer her son ongoing support and he has now started to engage with the outside world and she also reconnected with a couple of friends and they are in constant contact. When Mrs M called to thank PRONIA, she was very positive and grateful for all the support she had received since 2019.

More testimonials about the peer- support telephone lines:

“I have made some of my best friends and supports through support groups. They truly understand not only what you are going through at the time, but even when things are back on track they are still with you” Group Participant –Anonymous

Aged Care Employee Day

October 19, 2021

Celebrating our Unsung Heroes on Aged Care Employee Day Thank you for Caring!

PRONIA is very pleased to celebrate once again it’s Community Care Workers on the occasion of Aged Care Employee Day (ACED 2021) on Saturday, August 7, 2021. This year, the organization has another reason to celebrate: its nomination to the final phase of the LASA Excellence in Age Services Award, an award that aims to promote and recognise distinction across the age services industry. “It takes a special kind of dedication to work in aged care, especially during the trying times of the year and a half of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said LASA CEO Sean Rooney. “They all deserve our thanks for their professionalism, their warmth and their enthusiasm to help our elderly live comfortably.” Also expressing her gratitude is PRONIA’s CEO, Ms. Tina Douvos-Stathopoulos through a printed announcement, emphasizing that the message ‘Thanks for Caring’ recognizes the hard work of all and celebrates their contributions to the care and support of the vulnerable members of our community.

Deputy Director and Manager of Aged & Co-ordinated Care, Nikki Efremidis, also expresses her acknowledgment to all the community care workers, the coordinators, all the employees in the department, internal and external staff for their continuous dedication and commitment to the Organisation. “All of us at PRONIA want to congratulate all our accomplished aged care workers – that’s why we’re working hard to support our workforce to gain the recognition they deserve.”

This year, as due to the restrictions it’s not possible to hold a celebratory event, the organization is thanking all its community workers by sending them ‘a thank you hamper’ to commend them for their excellent work.

“Thank you to all our Community Care workers who provided and continue to provide services during this COVID time. You are valued for your hard work and dedication that you do with

your clients and carers” said the Coordinators of Brokered Services Anastasia Koussis and Fotini Zahariou.

It is worth noting that last year PRONIA’s Aged and Coordinated Care Unit delivered 176,500 hours of service to our aged care community to over 700 elderly people per week through the home care packages program, individual and group social support program and respite services.

In Australia, more than 360,000 people work in the sector, contributing to the care of almost 1.5 million seniors. On the 7th of August we honor these unsung heroes who through their work develop meaningful relationships with our elderly loved ones. Their dedication to a profession that is rewarding, but often challenging, is what makes them special and for that we are very grateful.

During the week running to 7th August, PRONIA’s social media will show videos and stories of its community care workers: https://www.facebook.com/PRONIAMELBOURNE

PRONIA has had a long, proud history in advocating for social justice, equality of opportunity for individuals and communities, with the aim of helping to create a stronger, cohesive, and inclusive society for all Australians. It is within this spirit that PRONIA supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the “yes” vote in the upcoming referendum to constitutionally recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as the First Peoples of Australia and a Voice to parliament.
